Parliamentary Session Addresses Climate Policy

Parliament convened for a special session to debate the Climate Action Framework Bill, which outlines the nation's path to carbon neutrality by 2050. The legislation includes provisions for renewable energy targets, carbon pricing mechanisms, and green job creation programs.

The bill has garnered support from across party lines, though debates continue over implementation timelines and funding mechanisms. Opposition leader Rajesh Kumar stated, 'While we support the environmental goals, we must ensure the transition doesn't burden working families or small businesses.'

Key provisions include a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030, mandatory renewable energy quotas for all states, and a $10 billion green transition fund. The legislation also establishes a Climate Change Commission to oversee implementation and monitor progress.

Environmental groups have praised the ambitious targets, while industry associations have requested longer transition periods for heavy manufacturing sectors. Public consultations will continue for another month before the final vote.

If passed, the legislation would make the country one of the first developing nations to legally commit to carbon neutrality within three decades.
